14 Ways to Make the Most of Your Tiny Apartment Balcony

An unused balcony is a tragedy, especially one that you can make cuter on your own! If your balcony has devolved into nothing more than a plant graveyard with the occasional bird feeder, we’re here to tell you that there are more options. There are many great ideas for transforming any neglected outdoor space into a wonderful and cozy hangout, whether it be for relaxing or entertaining. It doesn’t matter how small your balcony is, there is a guaranteed way to utilize it. You paid to live in this apartment, and it’s time to make the most of it!

    1. New Seating

If you do have the room, why not splurge for a new dining or lounging spot? If your balcony has ample seating you can add outdoor rugs and pillows or put in chairs or a lounge seat. Outdoor couches are also great both for relaxing with a book or entertaining friends.

    2. Make It Vertical

Do you have a small space? You can customize your square footage by thinking outside the box...and above the box. If you want plants, stick them in a vertical garden rather than spread planters across the floor, whether by using nesting tables, shelving, or hanging planters.

    3. Add Soothing Elements

A hugely important piece of decorating your balcony is making sure it feels like you. When you’re buying your chairs, rugs, planters, and more, make sure they match your vibe and your space. Go for things with soothing elements or colors, buy plants whose scents you enjoy, make sure the space really feels like yours.

    4. Plants, Plants, and More Plants

Without fail, surrounding a space with plants makes it feel more alive. Plants not only add an aesthetic appeal but do things for you chemically and spiritually. Whether you decide on hanging planters, miniature gardens, or potted plants, sprucing up your balcony with plants (and taking care of them) will liven up the space. If you’re worried about the care they need, you can buy low-light or outdoor plants that don’t need much from you or surround your space with cacti or succulents.

    5. All About The Minimalism

If your space is small, a proper minimalist look will go a long way. You can buy tables, chairs, and couches that will adhere to your space, and even just a bench with some comfortable throw pillows or cushions will add a lot of comfortable flairs.

    6. Rugs And Flooring

Not all balconies are created equal, and the stock flooring or material of your balcony may not be comfortable or appealing. Before you start bringing in the new furniture and plants, consider adding a rug to the space that really makes it pop. Look for colors or patterns that can accent your space and make it come alive.

    7. The Right Lounge

Again this one is space-enabled, but if your balcony can support a lounge chair or hammock, go for it! You don’t necessarily need to make your balcony ready for company, you can just make it a get-away space for yourself. If you have room for a nice lounge chair and that takes up most of the space but it’s what you want, go for it!

    8. Think About Color

Similar to the idea of making your balcony about you and including cozy elements is color. Look at your apartment, then consider the colors that you want to elevate your balcony space. Different accents can really make your space pop, especially when elevated by the plants, rug, and furniture.

    9. Don’t Forget The Lights

Twinkling lights, hanging lights, light strands, lanterns, lamps. There are many different possible light sources for your outdoor space, and there’s no reason your balcony shouldn’t look sharp at nighttime. Consider adding bold, bright light sources that truly make your small space pop.

    10. Create A Reading Nook

Despite all the time you’re going to spend on your balcony, there are few real activities that will be available to you in such a small space. You might spend a few minutes drinking coffee or enjoying the sunset, but any activity is going to be lounge-based in general. Therefore, you should make sure that you have a classy, cozy reading nook. Search for big accent chairs that you can curl up in, or design the space specifically around lounging.

    11. Maximize Your Wall Space

The biggest mistake that people make when it comes to utilizing any small space is making sure they’re taking advantage of their walls. Add shelves for plants and lights, hang wall slats for organization and hanging plants, and install floating tables that can flatten down. There are many ways to utilize your walls that won’t make you feel claustrophobic and will maximize the efficiency of your balcony.

    12. Take Advantage Of The View

If you have a balcony, that means you already have a view, and in many cases, it can be a substantial view of the city or country. When your square footage is extremely limited it may not be feasible to set up conventional furniture at all. Instead, you might need to consider arranging everything with an outward-facing view, that way you can utilize the separation of your apartment and your balcony, and simply open your sliding doors to create a larger space in general.

    13. Turn Your Balcony Into A Bar

Again, if your space is just too small you might consider ditching the furniture ideas entirely and simply setting up a bar against the railing of your balcony and building everything around that. Whether it’s buying a piece or doing a little DIY with some plywood, you can add some bistro stools and transform your small balcony into a breakfast nook or late-night bar.

    14. Think About Shade

As much as you want to soak up the sun, make sure you’re adding some skin protection. If you have a railing you can consider hanging curtains, adding an umbrella, or simply putting up some screens that will make your outdoor space cozy even during the warmer months.

Whatever you decide to do with your balcony, you can be certain that it will make the space better than what you had before. Make sure you utilize the space entirely and enjoy the view. While you’re sitting outside with a cup of coffee, your eyes may glance over a few of the things you’ve forgotten, such as that cute coffee shop down the street you used to visit or the dentist appointment you need to make for your kids.
